Get a Red Carpet-Ready Gent with Tommy John

The Oscars are coming up this Sunday, so cue the confetti! I've loved the red-carpet looks we've seen from all the lovely ladies this awards-season...but I'm also really enjoying this year's focus on those strong, stylish men! While most of the guys in our lives won't be walking the red carpet this Sunday (unless you're reading, Angelina!) they can absolutely be red-carpet ready for any special event in their lives with a few grooming essentials and some rockin' base-layer undergarments that will eliminate the need for any embarrassing adjustments or wardrobe malfunctions. You never know when the paparazzi may be standing by! So without further ado, below are a few mens' must-haves:

JSQ Red Carpet Rundown: Highlights from the Emmys

When I say highlights, I mean, "Did anyone notice the overabundance of highlighter-yellow gowns on the red carpet??" I was a fan of some more than others... My favorite was definitely the sleeves and stunning silhouette on Julianne Moore, and the particular neon color on Julie Bowen was pretty as well. Hear why they chose their gowns here. But the problem is...with this many gowns on the red carpet, none of these ladies had a chance of being crowned 'Best Dressed.' Where's Rachel Zoe when you need her? She would never have let this happen...Or did she?

Red-Carpet Rundown: Emmys 2011

The 2011 Emmy Awards were last night, and plenty of people looked smashing. Enough to warrant a Jenna Sais Quois Red Carpet post, for sure! A few gals looked dreadful, which we'll get to later, but there was one undeniable trend this year...

The carpet was absolutely stacked with long red gowns... And the sad part is, any one of them could have been a best dressed nominee. But unfortunately, with so much repetition, they mostly all just got lost in the shuffle. I think one of these ladies managed to distinguish herself on both fit and flair, so let's get to my Best and Worst Dressed picks!

I thought Kerry Washington looked sensational in Zahair Murad, and with that little extra sparkle and a fit that looked like it was made for her, I thought she ended up looking the Best in her red Red Carpet dress. Although, something is definitely off about her...like she's a bit too thin, or her face just looks reaally tight. Something strange is going on.

I love Heather Morris and I think she's absolutely gorgeous, but there was something a little too prom-like about her hair and makeup, earning her a spot on my Worst Dressed list. And while the color of her dress goes beautifully with her coloring, those ruffles are just overpowering. I like when she sticks to classic silhouettes that show off her great figure.

I thought Evan Rachel Wood looked stunning in this black glittery Elie Saab gown. I love how she let the dress speak for itself and kept her hair, makeup and accessories super simple and elegant. This, in my opinion, is Red Carpet Perfection.

Normally I think Jayma Mays from Glee is cute as a button, but something about this pink, frilly dress by Zuhair Murad isn't really age-appropriate. It certainly pairs well with her persona, but I want to see her looking much more sophisticated. Definitely a Worst Dressed nominee.

Everyone may not be in agreement with this Best Dressed pick because it's definitely not playing it safe, but I am just crazy in love with Heidi Klum's Christian Siriano dress. I love the color, the shoes, and her jewelry, which added a fun pop of color. She looked amazing! And I'd totally wear it.

Ariel Winters from Modern Family is definitely a candidate for Worst Dressed for me. While the dress is pretty, it not at all age-appropriate. I get that these young starlets want people to take them seriously on the carpet, but in no world should someone still have braces on their teeth and their cleavage bursting out in the same scenario. And the color really washes her out. She looks like a cute high-school girl in a ponytail trying on prom dresses, and if she were my daughter...this one would be a "No way!"

Julia Stiles looked beautiful in this lavender/gray lace dress with wrapped details. The Best Dressed Dexter star's gown looks great on her figure, it fits beautifully, and while it isn't the most jaw-dropping look we saw last night, she wore it, rather than the other way around. I thought she looked elegant, demure, and sophisticated.

Okay, now the unanimous pick for WORST DRESSED from pretty much everyone with two eyes was Paz De La Huerta...I almost can't even figure out where to start. I'm at a loss for words! She looks like she got thrown in the trunk of a car, and then pitched off a bridge with an anvil strapped to her ankles, but then managed to escape the depths of that swampy lake, throw on a gown, and make it to the Emmys just in time to walk the Red Carpet. Or she was inspired by the little girl from The Ring. What!? Just...how!? It's not even the dress...although that isn't great. It's the corpse-like lipstick, the styled-with-a-leaf-blower hair...and that fish-lipped face she's throwing at the cameras is doing nothing to help her cause either! She is beautiful. I get trying to set trends, or push the envelope, but I really can't believe anyone she knew actually let her leave the limo like that. This is the worst I've seen a celebrity look in any of my Red Carpet posts ever. Bar none. Yikes.

Red Carpet Finale

Well, it appears that with the climax of awards season, The Oscrs, this brings my Jenna Sais Quois Red Carpet Awards to a close as well. But I'm not going down without an ultra-pumped-up rendition of my award posts. I didn't seem to hate the red carpet looks as much as other people, and frankly, thought most of these ladies looked fabulous. There were plenty of great dresses in the middle-ground (Including Cate Blanchett's lavender Givenchy, which I actually did like). And a few that were...downright misses. See who was the best and worst below, and don't forget to check out my thoughts on the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Grammy's as well!

I will start off with my actual #1 pick for Best Dressed of the evening. And not because I majorly loved True Grit. Hailee Steinfeld just looked perfect from headband to toe. She was classic, feminine, age-appropriate and poised in this soft, pink Marchesa. I honestly wouldn't change a thing. She's Cinderella.

I think Scartlet Johannson looked like she got out of bed, glanced at her watch and thought, "Oh shoot, I guess it's time to go to the Oscars...Good thing I have this horrendous Dolce & Gabbana evening dress in my closet." Don't get me wrong, the back was a little hot... But everything else was a hot mess. Worst Dressed of the night.

I knew somebody would have to have snatched up an Oscar gown from Elie Saab's spectacular collection I blogged about here. I am just so happy it was Mila Kunis, who has really been a red carpet Best Dressed all-star this season. The dress is feminine, sexy, and she is styled perfectly. She is every bit the Oscar-Nominated actress.

I'm really just not sure why Worst Dressed nominee Nicole Kidman selected this sculptural Christian Dior dress for the Oscars. It does nothing for her shape, or skin tone. It kind of looks like a dated wedding gown from the early 1990's. And her hair? I get it, you love Keith Urban, but I wouldn't recommend getting hair tips from him...Better luck next year, Nicole.

Nude illusion, champagne colored gowns had a BIG moment this year, but my favorite of all of them has to be the Best Dressed Mandy Moore in this stunningly detailed Monique Lhuillier gown. In addition, I'm loving her coral-red lips, the sleek hair, and her big, classic earrings. She looks fabulous.

Okay, anyone who knows me knows that I've said time and time again that Amy Adams is a very one-note actress. But my criticism of her fashion choices honestly has nothing to do with that. She's simply Worst Dressed in this navy blue, sequined column gown by L'wren Scott. It's not the dress, but the styling. I don't like the loose hair with the gown, and that 1.3 Million dollars worth of Cartier jewelry is just weighing her down even more.

From what I've seen of Jennifer Lawrence, she is really hit or miss. This one just happened to be such a hit that it landed her on my Best Dressed list. This simple Calvin Klein Collection gown fits her like a Baywatch bathing suit. Honestly, she just looks stunning. And I would kill for that body, also...

Jennifer Hudson found her way onto my Worst Dressed list in this Atelier Versace gown because there is just something very weird happening with her decolletage, if you will. I think her body looks gorgeous, but she keeps highlighting her cleavage in every red carpet look, and it's just looking...deflated? Focus our attention elsewhere, Jennifer. The color is gorgeous though.

It was nearly impossible to find a picture of Camila Alves without Matthew McConaughey on her arm, but she was absolutely a Best Dressed nominee in this stunningly cut dress by Kaufman Franco. It fits perfectly, and I love the shape of the full skirt. If you're going to wear black, let it be like this! Her hair, makeup, and jewelry was also classically flawless. 

Finally, we have the always gorgeous Penelope Cruz, who literally just had a baby a month ago...I have no idea how these celebs do it. In this situation, she is Worst Dressed because I really, truly feel like this gown by L'Wren Scott is tacky. It kind of looks like something I'd imagine an Italian call-girl, with a martini in her fist, would wear to accompany some John to a business dinner...But hey, she was there to support her husband who was a nominee, so I give her props.

Oh My Grammys!

I have been having a lot of fun with the Jenna Sais Quois Red Carpet Awards this Winter. Check out my take on the Golden Globes and Sag Awards. And of course, the 2011 Grammy's did not disappoint! While there were some really amazing looks, and quite a few perfectly adequate ones, the Grammys were definitely about taking a risk...and well, some weren't as rewarding as others. See for yourselves!

Jennifer Lopez is my first pick for Best Dressed in this silver Pucci minidress. I love everything about this look, but especially those long extensions. She's still got it, and she's definitely working with it.

Kim Kardashian is definitely a Worst Dressed pick for me because I feel like for someone so beautiful, she really isn't doing very well on the red carpet. This Kaufman Franco dress is kind of shapeless, unflattering, and really just something we've seen again and again. Change it up, Kim!

Keri Hilson, a Best Dressed nominee, looked absolutely polished and chic on the red carpet in this Basil Soda Couture dress. I am in love with the drama of the neckline, paired with the structure of her asymmetrical hair. It's just perfection.

I am really confused by Worst Dressed nominee, Hayley Williams' red carpet look. Sequins, maribou, and see-through netting all in one dress? That is quite the feat by designer Jeremy Williams. Not to mention the clash of the fushia feathers with her hair color...it's just a lot for me to digest.

Though this look is definitely a bit mature for someone as young as Selena Gomez, I am still giving her a Best Dressed award for this J. Mendel dress. From the neck down, it's absolutely stunning, and perfectly tailored. From the neck up, she kind of looks like Rachel Bilson circa The OC, but adorable nonetheless.

Ciara is without a doubt a Worst Dressed award winner. There is nothing redeemable about this entire look. The dress is bizarre, the shoes are way too heavy for the hemline, and when you add that Naomi Campell hairstyle...it's just a lot.

Global Guts

The 2011 Golden Globes were on Sunday night, and I just can't seem to get the red carpet choices off my mind. While I was really impressed by the simplicity we saw from some, I was kind of underwhelmed by most, and some made me feel down right uncomfortable...

Thus I bring you, the very first ever (and who knows if it will ever be repeated...) Jenna Sais Quois Red Carpet Awards.

Emma Stone is my first pick for Best Dressed because she looks fresh, age appropriate, beachy and tastefully simple. The cut of this Calvin Klein dress is stunning, and while she looks a tad washed out, she took a chance and was definitely rewarded.

January Jones is my first pick for Worst Dressed and I know some of you will disagree with me on this. I will firmly say that, yes, she looks stunning and that Versace dress is a conversation starter, but I thought her Décolletage simply made me uncomfortable. I can't be the only one...

Anne Hathaway was absolutely Best Dressed in Armani Privé. I don't even dislike those shoulder pads a tiny bit. She looked absolutely gorgeous, and her hair and makeup were soft and pretty, but that sheer illusion piece on the back of her dress was a little bizarre. That's my only criticism. And I'm reaching for that one...
 

Julianne Moore in Lanvin is a Worst Dressed winner for me because though I applaud her guts, I just don't think the world is quite ready for it. I am all for asymmetry, and I could totally see some Beverly Hills socialite mother wearing this in 1988, but in 2011 and with that the sleeve going through that Bulgari necklace, and that bizarre bag it was frankly just a hot mess...

Claire Danes was another Best Dressed winner for me because like Emma Stone, and both wearing Calvin Klein, she looked fresh, young, simple, and classic. I loved the color on her, and we all know honeysuckle is the 2011 Pantone of the year...My only criticism here is that her hair kind of looks like Kate Gosselin, which is not cute...

Finally, Natalie Portman rings in the last Worst Dressed award and it has nothing to do with her being pregnant...she just looks like a Valentine's Day singing telegram girl who is secretly a conehead. The hair is disastrous, the rose...I don't even know, and that necklace? Natalie would have done well to heed the sage advice of Coco Chanel. If you know you're going to win an award, spring for the stylist. That is all I'm saying.


Missing from this list is Helena Bonham Carter, because I really think she is in a completely other league...and even if she had been wearing Catherine Zeta Jones' dress, nobody would have named her best dressed anyway. She's just on her own planet. I'm not against wearing two different colored shoes, if you're going for that look, but just don't make them dye-to-match junior bridesmaid shoes, please.
