Freudian Slip

One of my biggest challenges at work is that I had the very big shoes of Laura Sanders to fill! She is one of the most talented designers I've ever met (and a very funny stand-up comedienne as well), and she's definitely a designer with a very distinct style. The hard part is that when I took on her clients, a lot of them want things the way she would have done them...I feel a bit like the graphic designer equivalent of Julia Roberts in Stepmom.

This poster has been an ongoing quarterly thing for the Psychology Club at Ohio State, and features an illustration of Sigmund Freud doing seasonally appropriate activities. The first two images were created by Laura, and the third is the one I did while attempting to mimic Laura's style. I am proud of the final product, and hopefully the untrained eye won't know the difference! But what do your highly-trained eyes think?

Designer Makeup

Graphic designer, that is... I would totally love to have these packaging concepts for Pantone Makeup products, designed by Renata Viega and featured on The Dieline. Would you graphic design enthusiasts shell out for Pantone Cosmetics?

Have a Holly Jolly Christmas

It's Christmas morning!

I just finished a batch of blueberry streusel muffins, helped my mom bake breakfast strata, and chopped up vegetables for a veggie pizza for brunch. All the while, I was watching two of my favorite old movies, Every Girl Should Be Married and Meet Me in St. Louis. I am perfectly happy today and I hope you all are too. Lots of love this Christmas season, from me to you!

Sea Island Habitat for Humanity

Hello to whichever faithful blog readers have stuck it out through the radio silence of this Autumn and early Winter here at Jenna Sais Quois. I just got back from a week-long trip to John's Island, South Carolina where myself, and 17 Ohio State Students, participated in the Alternative Winter Break program through Buck-I-Serv. It was an incredible experience, and we worked with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity building flooring systems for two different homes in the area. In the end, our work was completely covered up by plywood, but houses don't stand up straight without a lot of infrastructural stuff underneath, which we were happy to help out with!

It was really hard work, and hammering super long nails into cold, hard wood was a challenge, but by the end we all got some muscles, some construction smarts...and sustained a few minor injuries along the way (i.e. splinters, blisters, bruises, etc.) Here are some photos from the trip. Enjoy!

Sideways hammering is even harder than normal hammering!

Lifting a side beam for the exterior frame

Tacking the floor joists in place

Stop! Hammertime.
I used a drop saw to cut all of these joists...Luckily, I still have all my fingers.

All of our hard work lies beneath these plywood sheets...

For Kids: A Closer Look

So, I remember promising more of my thesis to those friends and family who wanted to see how I spent a non-exaggerated 15-20 hours/day Spring Quarter prior to my graduation. Well, today you are in luck, folks. I wanted to share with you some of the pages of my book, as I prep them to zip off to the Index Awards in Copenhagen! (More on THAT later)

I am well aware that these images aren't the best...I'm working on it. But for now, please enjoy a more in depth (albeit very low-quality) look into my senior thesis project. And please click the images for a larger view!

Wintery Illustrations by Lisa Stubbs

I was just so charmed by the illustrations of Lisa Stubbs of Yorkshire, UK today on Etsy that I had to share with you all! I kind of want everything in her shop....

Don't Get Salty...

These business cards featured on The Dieline today are from the Gitam, Israel office of BBDO. They are definitely rad, but I'm not sure I would want to commit to just one condiment packet associated with my work. And I wouldn't want to have Sugar...too obvious for a lady. I think the salt packet would most accurately describe me because I am just soooo salty all the time. Ask Cate! But really, I just like the colors the best.

Ukulele Case Study

So one of my favorite projects this year (so far) has been working with the Ukulele Club at Ohio State on a logo. I love music, and play in a little guitar and uke combo with Cate, so this was right up my ally. I wanted to share some of the ones I came up with, and two of my favorite options.

Light Up The Night

I would like to share with you all my very first attempt at "lettering" a la Jessica Hische. I don't think it's quite right, but hey, it was worth a try... Also, Light Up The Night is an Off-Campus Campaign at OSU that involves a holiday light decorating contest.
